The story
The story began four years ago while exploring the heart of the old city.
We came across an infamous red light area where thousands “work the line” during the day and night. Either been tricked into prostitution as a young girl, or having no other option left to feed a starving family, women are being forced into the flesh trade.  Not by choice but because of poverty.

Love Calcutta Arts was born with a desire to bring freedom to young women, to those who do not carry their father’s family name - because they do not know what his name is.

Love Calcutta Arts is a business that provides economic freedom to its staff, as well as a sense of dignity and self worth. It provides freedom to those girls who would otherwise be at risk of abuse. To break the cycle of generations of demeaning slavery.

The business is situated right where the girls live and work, in the heart of the same community.

We currently employ nine girls, aged between 17 and 25 years.  After three months of training, their work is carefully supervised to ensure that a high standard of quality is achieved. Some are being trained in other skills, such as screen printing.

The girls’ faces are now shining, because they have hope for a bright future. But there are others waiting to join. Can you help us to make a difference?

Indian Paper Crafts
India has some of the oldest handmade paper industry in the world. With renewed interest in handmade papers as an artistic medium, today thousands of artisans in rural areas earn a living by making paper.

Handmade papers are made from recycled waste such as cotton rags and paper pulp, mixed with natural fibers, such as rice straw, jute, flowers or colored cotton fibers to give a mottling effect. After drying the papers are dyed and cut into sheets, ready to be used in all sorts of applications imaginable.

Our city provides us with a large variety of hand made papers as well as numerous ornaments, beads and sequins. Using this vast selection of supplies we create designer cards and bags for your special occasions.  Please note that as with all hand made papers there may be some differences in color depth, and may vary from the pictures shown.
